Lucerne is a nutritious addition to a horse's diet, especially for horses that benefit from additional nutrients in their diet. Lucerne has a relatively high protein content. In the Hartog Lucerne Mix, the leaves are included in the mix because they are higher in protein than the fibrous stem. The lucerne included in the Lucerne Mix is dried in the Hartog factory shortly after mowing. Due to the artificial drying process, the vitamins E and A are better preserved than sun-dried forage. Despite the addition of molasses to the Lucerne Mix the mixture still has a relatively low sugar (and starch) content due to the naturally low levels of the lucerne plant itself. In addition, lucerne is rich in highly fermentable fiber and is therefore recommended for horses prone to fine droppings, colic, or underweight horses. By adding Lucerne Mix to the horse's ration, additional nutrients are added without increasing the amount of concentrate feed. This makes Lucerne Mix a valuable part of the diet for all types of horses, such as horses sensitive to gastric ulcers. The naturally high calcium content of lucerne is also able to support the stomach. When Lucerne Mix is added to the portion of concentrate feed, the volume of the ration increases considerably.
