The Kimblewick mouthpiece is a type of Pelham but has a milder action and is ridden with one rein. The rider can adjust the bit's sharpness. The lower the rein is attached, the greater the leverage, and the sharper the bit. This mouthpiece offers the rider more control over the horse than a standard mouthpiece. The Kimblewick is not suitable for inexperienced riders.

The ring mouthpiece is a variation on the double-jointed bit. The rings in the center encourage the horse to play with the bit. This increases tongue activity, which causes the horse to produce more saliva and relax its jaws, making it more likely to release the bit.
