Description
The Full Cheek Gag Double Jointed Sweet Iron is designed for riders seeking a bit that offers both directional clarity and light poll pressure, helping horses lift through the shoulders while maintaining straightness. This bit brings together the guiding influence of a full cheek and the elevating effect of gag rings, creating a versatile tool for schooling and training.

It supports horses that tend to lean or fall forward, gently encouraging them to rebalance and engage from behind without creating resistance.

Made from sweet iron, the mouthpiece naturally oxidizes during use, which stimulates salivation and encourages the horse to stay soft and accepting in the mouth. This contributes to a more supple contact and a calmer, more confident way of going.

The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly across the tongue and bars, preventing the nutcracker effect and offering a smooth, stable feel. Horses that benefit from balanced pressure and a bit that follows the shape of the mouth often respond particularly well to this design. It is also a great option for horses with a lower palate, as the double-jointed construction reduces upward movement toward the roof of the mouth, providing extra comfort.

The full cheek stabilises the bit laterally, helping guide the horse’s shoulders and improve turning, especially beneficial for younger or less balanced horses. The gag action, activated by cheekpieces that run through the rings, creates a gentle lifting effect by applying poll pressure. This can be especially useful for horses that tend to lean on the forehand or for moments that require added lightness in the hand.

Ideal for

  • Horses that need elevation and straightness support
  • Riders developing balance, turning, or responsiveness
  • Suitable for jumping, cross-training, or advanced flatwork

Care & use

After each ride, rinse the bit with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Over time, the sweet iron will develop a light patina — a natural oxidation process that enhances taste and acceptance. Store in a dry place and check regularly for smooth, even wear.

Make sure the bit is positioned correctly: the star must be on the left side and the Velari logo on the right.
